Centralia Philharmonic Orchestra

This Monday, the Centralia Philharmonic Orchestra had another excellent practice under the direction of Mathew Webster at the Centralia Cultural Society, where, once again, junior high students from Iuka and Centralia joined us to practice the two songs that will feature them. Our upcoming concert is on Sunday, October 19th, at 3 pm at the Centralia Cultural Society, which will be a section feature concert highlighting the woodwinds.

We began practice with "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and a suite of songs from the "Harry Potter" movies, for which student players will accompany us. Conductor Mathew Webster explained how all the different groups of instruments came to join the orchestra. After the students left, the conductor asked the orchestra to consider whether we wanted to limit our numbers or continue to allow anyone to join. After that, the orchestra worked on the Handel piece "Concerto for Orchestra," and Andrew Steiniger joined us on saxophone as the soloist for "Sabre Dance."

As you might have noticed, we had an interim photographer for this week's pictures. The usual photographer thinks she did a great job. She apologizes to her own section for forgetting to take a picture of them. Until next week!

This Monday, the Centralia Philharmonic Orchestra had an exciting practice under the direction of Mathew Webster at the Centralia Cultural Society, where junior high students from Iuka and Centralia joined us to practice the two songs that will feature them. Our upcoming concert is on Sunday, October 19th, at 3 pm at the Centralia Cultural Society, which will be a section feature concert highlighting the woodwinds.

Once again, we began practice with "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and a suite of songs from the "Harry Potter" movies, but this time, several flute and clarinet student players joined us. We patiently went through each piece because there were some notes that the students had never played before. Conductor Mathew Webster and orchestra members helped them out in their respective sections to learn the correct finger placements. After the students left for the evening, we listened back to our performance of the Mozart piece "Minuette and Trio" and quickly realized that playing lighter and softer would be needed for the melody to come out in this piece. We also worked on "Sabre Dance" and "The Stars and Stripes Forever," as well as "Clarinet Candy," in which our clarinets have their featured parts down, but the rest of the orchestra needed some tweaks to the accompaniment underneath.

At this practice, we began by working on "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and a suite of songs from the "Harry Potter" movies, in anticipation of the following week when student players would join us at the start of practice. We also spent time on an arrangement of "The Stars and Stripes Forever" for the concert, and once again worked on "Minuette and Trio" and "Sabre Dance," focusing on dynamics in the former and tempo in the latter.
